History 103 (Global Problems in History)
Topic for Fall Semester 2017:
A HISTORY OF WESTERN ASIAN CIVILIZATIONS AND CULTURES

Description: Since ancient times, Asia has been home to the vast majority of the world’s population, and up until comparatively recently, has been home to the centers of intellectual production and global economy. This course offers an overview of the various regions of Western Asia from antiquity up until contemporary times, which will include the modern regions of the Middle East (West Asia), the Indian Subcontinent (South Asia), and parts of Central and Southeast Asia as well. In so doing, it also will give students an overview of some of the key literature and historical documentation for the continent’s peoples and cultures, and offer them a jumping-off point to undertake more detailed studies of Asian cultures and peoples. The course is intended to complement AIS 101 (Introduction to Asian Studies), which focuses on the Indo-Pacific region, and it canlay the groundwork for future course work in either History or Asian Studies..
NOTE: You will need a username and password to access course files. If you are registered for the course and do not have it, you will be able to acquire it from the "Announcements" tab on WebCampus. Otherwise, it will be given on the first day of class. You will need to have a version of the Adobe Acrobat reader (PDF file-reader) to access files. See me if this will be a problem.
