History 209 (World Civilizations, 1500-present)

Description: This course examines some of the major issues that have shaped the human experience in various regions of the world from medieval times up to the reshaping of the old world order at the end of the First World War. It is therefore a slightly abridged version of the History 209 course given during the regular semester term. The major theme of the course is the gradual integration of the various regions of the world into a single interconnected world system, beginning with the expansion of trans-oceanic trade centered on Europe in the fifteenth century. We will also attempt to examine the internal dynamics of change in the various parts of this growing world system. Each week, we will study one major set of issues and analyze their global significance. Our goal is to assimilate factual knowledge about the human experience over the course of this 500-year period within the interpretive framework of the modern world system, in particular by examining the primary source historical record of various periods and cultures.

If all else fails, this will also be given on the first day of class. You will need to have either a version of the Adobe Acrobat reader (PDF file-reader) to access files.
